  • One comment was ‘In fact this list is just the most pretentious restaurants in Lyon’

Martin, B. (2018) ‘Lyon Is the Real Capital of French Food’. GQ [online] 12 March. available at <https://www.gq.com/story/lyon-french-food-travel-guide> [10 October 2019]

  • One of the most beautifully written pieces about the city
  • Indeed, to dine in Lyon today is to see a city at the inflection point between old and new, a place balanced between the still-living culture it created long ago and the new world that it wrought, all of it fuelled by a civic belief in food as daily sacrament, a creed so deeply bred as to seem almost casual.

Recommendations from locals on Reddit

There’s a Lyon subreddit, where you’ll need to use Google Translate but it does have good questions and answers regarding food.

‘For sightseeing 2/3 days are enough. As for food, a lifetime is not long enough! I don’t know about any blog but I love Le Petit Paumé. This is a free restaurant guide/critics published (paper and online) every year by students who are not food pros but their recommendations are always very reliable, and you can just browse their website according to which district you are in, or what kind of cuisine you want to try. This sub is full of food lovers (as is the city itself) so don’t hesitate to come back with more detailed questions/recommendations queries!

‘Paul Bocuse market is nice but very expensive and not very “popular” (only rich people and tourist shop there), le marché de la croix rousse is better. It’s on the boulevard de la croix-rousse every Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 6 am to 1:30 pm (95 shopkeepers). Try to avoid restaurants from rue martinière, rue saint jean and rue des marronniers because it’s mainly for tourists.’
